On September 16, 2013, we were proud to host U.S. Department of Education officials as part of the “Education Built to Last” facilities and best practices tour. The national tour consisted of visits to 16 west coast schools that have received the national Green Ribbon Schools Award.
ECHS is a proud recipient of the inaugural U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools award. The award honors schools and districts that are exemplary in reducing environmental impact and costs; improving the health and wellness of students and staff; and providing effective environmental and sustainability education, which incorporates STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), civic skills and green career pathways.
ECS Founder Alison Suffet Diaz shared, “Visits like these are a great acknowledgement of our staff, our students and our approach. We want to continue to share our campus and best practices with educators far and wide.”
In addition to U.S. Department of Education officials, many other local dignitaries attended the student-led tour of the ECHS campus including officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), City of Lawndale, California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) and Los Angeles County Office of Education.
