Dr. Owen’s passion for educational leadership began with her own experiential journeys. She is an avid adventurer, often found disappearing into the wilderness for whitewater boating, mountain biking, canyoneering, or rowing in the moonlight before the school day. Not surprisingly, Dr. Owen came to ECHS in 2002 following her experience as an outdoor instructor, where she led students on their own unique adventures throughout California, while teaching ecology and environmental principles.
Having grown up in the South Bay, Dr. Owen is particularly inspired by the opportunity to provide leadership for authentic learning and environmental justice within her own community. She helps ensure every student can experience what has moved her both personally and professionally. She is determined to provide a rich, meaningful, rigorous and transferable education for ECHS youth. Her current focus is on developing systems and structures to support professional growth across classrooms, to help ensure the challenging and creative collaborative work of ECHS teachers can continue to grow and be sustained.
Dr. Owen spent her early years at ECHS teaching Math and Environmental Science. She became Assistant Principal in 2006 and has served as Principal since 2009. Dr. Owen’s experiences while at ECHS exemplify lifelong learning; she became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2006 and has since returned to school to earn her M.S. and Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Administration and Policy. In her “free” time, Dr. Owen serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University.
In May 2014, Dr. Owen transitioned into a new role as the Director of Urban Discovery Academy, while becoming an addition to ECS's Board of Directors.
