We are especially excited to invite our community members to join us during our “Meet Your Lawmakers” panel in which our local legislators will share their own stories with our students on the importance of civic participation, advocacy and resilience when working to reform local and national policies. At ECS, our mission is to reimagine public education in low-income communities of color to prepare conscious, critical thinkers who are equipped to graduate from college and create a more equitable and sustainable world. Whether it’s organizing a hike to local parks for other students in their community or sharing about social justice issues with elected officials, ECS students are advocates and change makers. Great things are accomplished when we are compelled to organize our words and thoughts around a definitive action. At ECS, our students boldly innovate, lead and are a positive force in their communities.
Please RSVP your attendance. Any additional questions, please email julie_vo@ecsonline.org
Meet Your Lawmakers Keynote Panelists
Panelist: Senator Steven Bradford
Steven Bradford brings a lifetime of experience to the California State Senate. In over two decades of public service – first as a Gardena City Councilman, then as a State Assemblyman and now as a State Senator – Bradford has proven himself to be a citizen activist. He views himself as a public servant and not a politician. Public service was instilled in him by his parents who taught him the value of giving back to the community.
In Senator Bradford’s first year in the State Senate in 2017 he had 11 bills signed into law by Governor Brown. These laws improved public safety, transportation, worker’s compensation, the environment, and education. In addition to the legislative accomplishments, Bradford secured $11.3 million in the state budget for Compton Community College and helped secure a $35 million grant to Watts Rising for affordable housing, green space, and local workforce development. This legislative session, Bradford authored 21 measures making their way through the legislative process. He has served as Chair of the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee and was appointed Chair of the Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee.
Panelist: Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragan
Nanette Diaz Barragán is the first Latina ever to represent California’s 44th Congressional district. Born in Harbor City and growing up in its surrounding harbor communities, Nanette’s humble beginnings shaped her interest in issues that matter locally: environmental and health justice, immigration reform, strengthening the economy and affordable and accessible education. Nanette was also the first woman in 12 years to be elected to the Hermosa Beach City Council. During her two-year term on the city council, Nanette was a strong advocate for environmental justice.
Nanette is the Second-Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and a member of the Progressive Caucus. She serves on the House Committee on
Homeland Security and was appointed to the exclusive House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Nanette serves as a voice for the communities that have been on the frontlines of the negative health impacts associated with climate change and environmental injustice.
Panelist: Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi
Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) represents California’s 66th Assembly District, located in the South Bay of Los Angeles County. He is a former prosecutor and Deputy Attorney General with the California Department of Justice and a former Torrance School Board member. As former Chairman of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, Muratsuchi helped deliver essential funding for our K-12 schools, the University of California, the California State University, and California community colleges. In 2017, Muratsuchi delivered $10 million in dedicated funding for the Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SCROC) in Torrance.
A champion for the environment, Muratsuchi wrote AB 1775 to oppose the Trump Administration’s proposal to renew offshore oil drilling off California’s coast. He also wrote several new laws to make the Torrance Refinery and other oil refineries safer. Muratsuchi authored AB 754, a law that provides funding for coastal protection programs, and AB 2711 to help defeat an oil drilling proposal in Hermosa Beach.
