About The Moth & High School StorySLAM
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. The Moth has presented more than ten thousand stories to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded nearly 25 million times a year, and the Peabody Award-winning The Moth Radio Hour airs weekly on radio stations nationwide. The Moth High School StorySLAM brings the art and craft of personal storytelling to high school students.
Originating in New York City, Environmental Charter High School (ECHS) is the FIRST school outside of New York to hold the high school program. Students meet after school with Moth instructors and ECHS faculty advisors and share stories, learn the craft, and get comfortable speaking in front of an audience. After five weeks of preparation, students share their stories onstage at a StorySLAM for their school community. The impact of this seemingly simple process has been staggering. Students have identified newfound empathy, confidence, life perspective, and the rare feeling of being listened to without being interrupted.
