ECS Thanks Chevron for Long-Term Support and $160,000 grant for ECMS 2012 STEM programs
Everyone at Environmental Charter Schools (ECS) is grateful for the generous financial support from Chevron – and we extend our heartfelt thanks for the company’s continued generosity in 2012 with a $160,000 grant to support the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs at Environmental Charter Middle School (ECMS).
The grant funds two ECMS projects: Project #1 equips six classrooms at ECMS to spark student interest and competency in STEM subjects. Project #2 provides regular access to computers for classroom instruction and student projects through mobile computer labs.
Funds were allocated for these awesome technologies:
- Eight large mobile lab/project stations with access to electricity and water
- A rooftop greenhouse attached to the biology classroom to create an authentic indoor/outdoor learning environment
- A rooftop greenhouse attached to the biology classroom to create an authentic indoor/outdoor learning environment
- Six SMART Boards for the math and science classrooms
- Six class sets of SMART Board interactive student response systems.
- Two mobile computer labs of 40 computers each
- With two charging carts; and accessories, batteries, cables and printers
This project aims to use technology to attract middle school students to STEM subjects as well as improve classroom instruction by diversifying instructional methodologies and facilitating regular assessment of student learning.
“Minority students and females are largely underrepresented in STEM careers at a time when there is a growing demand for workers with STEM degrees,” ECHS Exec. Dir. Suffet asserted, adding that the strategic use of technology in schools is a proven means to ignite interest in STEM fields and to improve pre-college training in STEM.
We cannot thank Chevron enough for its support over the years and the faith the company continues placing in ECS to be worthy stewards of its funds.
