Rockets flew over a bare field at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson Thursday, part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum at Environmental Charter High School, where students are exposed to higher-level STEM concepts while integrating hands-on learning opportunities that ignite student engagement.
This is a unique part of Greg Lakey’s course, where rocketry and physics concepts are introduced to students at all math levels. As a part of their “Understanding Quadratics Through Rocketry” unit, ECHS students’ build, sand, and paint rockets, then measure their altitude by utilizing trigonometric ratios with a constructed device called a “tangent.”
