  • Adrian Pulido, 9th grader, sets his rocket in the launcher as teacher Greg Lakey watches. Rockets flew over a bare field at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson Thursday, part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum at Environmental Charter High School, where students are exposed to higher-level STEM concepts while integrating hands-on learning opportunities that ignite student engagement. This is a unique part of Greg Lakey's course, where rocketry and physics concepts are introduced to students at all math levels. As a part of their ÒUnderstanding Quadratics Through RocketryÓ unit, ECHS studentsÕ build, sand, and paint rockets, then measures their altitude by utilizing trigonometric ratios with a constructed device called a Òtangent.Ó Photos by Brad Graverson/SCNG/The Daily Breeze/05-18-17
