Dr. Hughie Barnes is a life-long learner. Within a few years after retiring from a successful Federal career., she began work on her doctorate in education at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology. She completed the program in 2013, after only 3 years of study and research.
Dr. Barnes’ undergraduate study, in Business Administration, was completed at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. Shortly after marriage and moving to Los Angeles, Dr. Barnes returned to college and received an MBA from Pepperdine University, while continuing full-time employment and raising a family.
During her Federal career, Dr. Barnes served in multiple Federal agencies in Utah, Colorado, and finally in Los Angeles, California. Her professional work was in Human Resources (HR) Management, serving in such roles as the HR Director, Training Officer, and Employee and Labor Relations Officer. Her last position was director of the Employment Services Branch with the Federal Aviation Administration in Lawndale, California.
Along with graduate studies, some of Dr. Barnes’ post-retirement activities have included short-term mission trips to Uganda and also Zimbabwe, serving Los Angeles County courts as a mediator, volunteering at local elementary school reading clubs, teaching piano lessons, and leisure travel.
Her passion for education has been a driving force in supporting and encouraging others. She remains intrigued with her completed dissertation topic, “Called to Lead” and hopes to write and research more on this subject in the future.
Dr. Barnes is blessed with two adult children and is an active member of her local church, where she serves as the Director of the Education Department, Director of Women’s programs, and a teacher/facilitator of small group studies.
